Newly formed society to promote Nuclear Cardiology in the Asia-Pacific Region Nuclear Cardiology in the Asia-Pacific Region has received a boost with the formation of an Asian-Pacific Society of Nuclear Cardiology comprising nuclear medicine physicians and nuclear cardiologists from Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The society held its inaugural meeting in Singapore on the 27th of June 2000, in conjunction with the XIII ASEAN Congress of Cardiology Workshop in Nuclear Cardiology. Delegates from 12 Asian-Pacific countries as well as international speakers from Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom attended this event. Chairing the inaugural meeting were Prof Nagara Tamaki (Japan) and Dr Felix Sundram (Singapore). Prof Shahryar A Sheikh, President of the Asia-Pacific Society of Cardiology (APSC), spoke at the meeting supporting the role of nuclear cardiology and endorsing the establishment of the Society under the auspices of the APSC. There was a unanimous decision by all delegates to establish the society with the aim of promoting the development of the nuclear cardiology throughout the Asia-Pacific Region as an appropriate and useful diagnostic tool in cardiovascular disease, increasing awareness and understanding of the role that nuclear cardiology can play in the management of heart disease, improving the quality of nuclear cardiology practice, supporting the training and teaching of nuclear cardiology, and fostering co-operation and fellowship between the nuclear cardiology communities in the Region. Prof Liu Xiu-Jie (China) was elected President
of the newly formed society and Prof Nagara Tamaki (Japan) as Special
Advisor. The plan is for regular nuclear cardiology meetings to be held
in various Asia-Pacific countries in conjunction with major medical meetings.
The next APSNC nuclear cardiology meeting is planned for October 2001
in Manila, the Philippines. XIII ASEAN Congress of Cardiology Workshop in Nuclear Cardiology This two-day workshop organized by the
Singapore Workgroup was held from 26-27th June 2000. International
speakers included Prof Nagara Tamaki (Japan), Prof Mario Verani (USA),
Prof Richard Underwood (UK), and Prof Dudley Pennell (UK). The meeting
was attended by over 50 participants from 13 countries many of whom also
came for the inaugural meeting of the Asian-Pacific Society of Nuclear
